The chilled backwaters reflecting the rising or setting sun and the coconut trees on the sides, with a calm breeze is a distinctive aura to experience. Along with these natural material the indigenous culture of this part of Kerala will inspire you living a simple yet dignified life in a style.

 

Location 1: Champakkulam

Champakkulam is part of a unique landscape named ‘Kuttanad’ where below sea level farming is practiced and it’s been criss-crossed by rivers backwaters and canals. This region, Kuttanad, is called the rice bowl of Kerala for the vast paddy fields and the life of the local community is closely related to farming and the uncertainties associated with it. This place is a hot bed of culture and there are many traditional art forms being practiced here, like Kathakali.

Activities Organized:
1.Guided village walk with different themes like, agriculture, climate change, impact of unscientific development of infrastructure, local culture and myths, art and craft etc;

2.Country boating through the canals and backwaters to experience and explore the way of life in this water world.

3.Community Kitchen not only teaches a lesson or two in cooking local flavours but it creates a binding between the guest and the local community. It also helps us understand, from where our food come, how it’s grown, how it’s collected and how it’s relevant in terms of nutrients and for a sustainable living.

4.Cycling through the village with a local map helps us explore the village and the nearby localities

 

How to reach?
Nearest bus station is at Alappuzha and the distance to the village is 15 km. Nearest railway station is at Alappuzha and it’s around 15 km from Champakkulam. Nearest airport is Kochi International Airport and it’s around 97 km from the village.

 

Regular tourist attractions: Historical churches, Boat cruise in backwaters, Alappuzha beaches.

 

 

Location 2: Arattupuzha

Arattupuzha is a unique land sandwiched between backwaters and sea. Life of people here is closely linked to the water bodies and fishing. Coir (a natural fibre extracted from coconut shell) making is a traditional work which provided employment and livelihood for the majority of population. There are numerous temples and churches which tell stories of the people and their land.

 

 

Activities Organized:
1.Guided village walk with different themes like, agriculture, climate change, impact of unscientific development of infrastructure, local culture and myths, art and craft, medicinal plants, organic farming etc;

2.Country boating through the canals and backwaters to experience and explore the way of life in this water world.

3.Community Kitchen not only teaches a lesson or two in cooking local flavours but it creates a binding between the guest and the local community. It also helps us understand, from where our food come, how it’s grown, how it’s collected and how it’s relevant in terms of nutrients and for a sustainable living.

4.Fishing is an interesting activity and cooking freshly caught fish by the back waters is an activity we organize here.

5.Cycling through the village with a local map helps us explore the village and the nearby localities

6.A day trip to explore and experience the rich culture and it’s symbols like age old temples, palaces and all is a programme that could be organized.

Nearest bus station is at Kayamkulam and the distance to the village is 9km. Nearest railway station is at Kayamkulam and it’s around 9 km from Champakkulam. Nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport and it’s around 110 km from the village.
